Julie Skarratt

How often have you said, I wish I had a camera? Well, with Julie Skarratt as my friend, I can only tell you how lucky I've been to have her around, following me from country to country, documenting my work, and being part of the good times. Julie started out as a model in Australia and segued into photography. Rather than being in front of the camera, she wanted to be behind the scene, capturing on film the beauty and emotions of weddings, milestone parties, and celebrations. To say we've "been there" and "done that" together would be an understatement. She's traveled the world with me for my clients, and together we've pulled off some of the most incredible photo shoots. Shooting an event can be nerve-racking, but she's always calm, never tires even after a long day, and captures the shots you'll go back to time and again. I recall one where the wind was howling and the bride was almost swept away. Another where the cake was falling over and Julie very calmly told me we should do the cake cutting NOW. Her keen eye and documentary style of photography always brings me right back to the exact place and time the images were shot. You've seen her work in the pages of Town and Country Magazine, she's shot for many of my books, and if you have the chance to work with her, I can assure you, you won’t be disappointed.

Tips from Julie.

  • Don’t wear black to a party unless you are working, wearing a tux or going to a funeral.
  • If you want a certain photo that you have in your mind, tell me.
  • Daylight is every photographer’s best friend; after dark a camera flash is a photographer’s best tool.
  • Keep smiling. It will make those around you smile too.
  • You can always throw a bad photo away, but if you didn’t take it in the first place, you will never know what you might have missed.
