Valentine%27s%20Tables

Do something different this Valentine’s, and have a party for more that just the two of you. Instead of the usual candlelit dinner with your boyfriend or girlfriend sitting across the table wondering what’s next, have a group of friends over to celebrate the day. Set a gorgeous table, cook a delicious meal, crack open a bottle of spectacular wine, and spread the love. Play matchmaker if it’s in the cards, or have a few other couples over if that’s your fancy. And if you’re single but still love the Valentine’s mood, have a group of your single friends over to celebrate.

A splash of red is all you need to set the scene. Whether it’s a red goblet and red flowers in small vases set on an all-white table, or you want to go completely over the top with red chargers, red goblets, red flowers surrounding the plates, and a red napkin, your effort will certainly be appreciated. It’s fun to run with a theme and make it personal. Mix the red with gold, try reds with pinks, or even reds with browns. For a really over the top, sexy look, then go for red and black: it’s naughty.

Roses aren’t the only option either. As you know, on Valentine’s Day the price goes through the roof, so instead, use red carnations; they’re a gorgeous flower that has a bad rap. But in truth, when used correctly, they’re just as stunning as roses. I love taking a floral oasis (sponge) and studding the oasis completely with flowers for a rich look. You find oases in the shape of balls, squares, and triangles. Soak it well to make sure there’s enough moisture to keep your flowers alive.

And of course, don’t forget candles. Red votives can be purchased at your local candle shop, or take your clear votives and wrap them with red cellophane for just the right shade.

For menu ideas, check out these recipes including an over the top Smashed Potatoes with Caviar, Lobster and Pasta, and decadent Chocolate Pot Au Crème. And if cooking isn’t your thing, these chocolate-covered strawberries can be shipped directly from the store if you don’t have time to melt a little chocolate over a double boiler. And if your caloric preference is liquid, here's a fun Champagne Sugared Flute you’ll love.
